Te Tiriti o Waitangi

So for 500 years the Maori were the only people in Aotearoa. Then Captain Cook came to Aotearoa in 1769. In the 1790's Pakeha came to Aotearoa to hunt seals and whales. They traded potatoes and pigs for 1 MUSKET!! I'm not kidding... they traded these for a musket which is a gun. This led to war so in 1840 the British made a treaty. This allowed the Maori to keep their land but the British had first right to buy it. The Maori also became British subjects. So this has caused some unrest for the Maori. Even today there is still some conflict happening because the government thought it was unfair. So this got turned into a national holiday on February 6. That's all I know about the Treaty of Waitangi.

Do you enjoy Waitangi day?

This is a picture of the real treaty!
