Week 3: Through Careful Observation

Day and Night By MC Escher
THE AMAZING WORLD OF M. C. ESCHER

So I am looking at this picture and the first thing that I notice is two lots of birds. One set is black and one set is white. And they turn into squares which make the paddocks. There is also two rivers one is black and one is white. There is also two towns one is white and one is black. The left side is white and the right side is black. The two sides of the painting are mirror images. I don't get why the birds turn into paddocks. I don't understand what that means.

I had a look at more of MC Escher's work and they are a little bit like illusions.

What do you think of this artwork?

  1. Kia Ora William,

You’ve summarised the picture incredibly well.. I like how you explained everything with the differences in direction and colour and then concluded it was a mirrored image. I didn’t realise until you pointed it out, you are absolutely correct!

I don’t quite understand why the birds become paddocks either but I would speculate it is a metaphor for how everything can look different with a bit of perspective. That is to say you might see one thing (the bird) when you look closely, but if you step back, it could be something else entirely (the paddock) so you should always try to see all sides and angles before you make a decision.

Do you know any other cool optical illusions? Perhaps you could comment me back some of your favourite ones.

    Ngā mihi maioha,
