Week 2: Celebrate Diversity

Ainu People:

Facts:
1. The government in the 1800s put policies in place that meant the Ainu people were considered a dying culture.

2. Ainu people were forbidden to speak the language and were forced to speak Japanese and their land was turned into public land.

3. Today people are trying to save the Ainu culture especially their language, rituals, dance and music.

4. By the time the Olympics come to Japan in 2020 they will have built an Ainu Museum and a National Park.


The Maya People:

Facts:
1. 6 million Mayan people in the world living in countries such as Mexico, Guatemala and Belize.

2. 30 Languages with some common words such as sun, corn and mother.

3. Came up with the calendar system.

4. Built great cities in line with the sun, moon and sky.

5. Culture is being preserved though rituals and traditions.

    You have created an awesome blog post here about celebrating diversity and have included so many facts about all these indigenous communities!
    You have got so much new information that I haven’t heard before in this post, so it was awesome to be able to learn new things. I never knew that the Ainu people were forbidden to speak their own language, or that the Maya people came up with the calendar system, so thank you for sharing this new information.
    What is your favourite fact that you learnt from partaking in this activity?
    You mentioned that the Maya people’s culture is being preserved through rituals and traditions. Do you know what kinds or rituals and tradition they have/do?
